The House in the Woods
Part 5:  Scanned Pictures of Early Cleanup and Floor Removal

October, 2005

Taking a step back timewise, here are some earlier photos taken with a film camera and scanned.

I think I mentioned already that after pulling out the carpeting, we had to remove the particle board underlayment prior to laying the hardwood.  This was a big job.  It was made somewhat easier by using the shovel and cutting the sheets into smaller pieces with a circular saw before prying them up.  Since the brick from the fireplace was laid on top of the particle board, I used wood chisels to carve it out slightly less than flush.

Here is an action shot of the vinyl-on top of plywood-on top of more vinyl-on top of plywood underlayment coming up in the kitchen.  This room was a bear.  Since the base cabinets were sitting on plywood instead of particle board it was tough chiseling out flush with the kickplates.  Once I got as close as I could with the circular saw, I cut out narrow strips using a sawzall cutting perpendicular to the kickplates, then chiseled out the strips.

Yeah, we put the kid to work.  Alison took up the carpet padding on the second floor and removed many staples from the underlayment.

Here is the built-in that was in the eat-in kitchen prior to being torn out.  Some of the center shelving has already been removed and the hole in the fascia board was where I wanted to see what was behind it before going after it with a sawzall.

More demolition of the built-in.  It's a good thing we tore it out because we discovered some damp drywall back there.  On the other side of this wall is the laundry room and the washing machine hookups were leaking in the wall.  Just a small drip but the sole plate and drywall at the bottom were pretty wet.  I think some earlier pics show where we cut out the drywall showing the plumbing behind the washer hookups.
The next two pictures show the discoveries underneath the gas range and the washing machine.  Just lovely.

And here's the always-cheerful "unsinkable Molly Brown" Janet sweating like a butcher and hammering down nails prior to tossing the pieces on the burn pile.
