Calling All Wimps!

According to an article in a London newspaper called The Daily Mail dated April 30, 2003 British scientists have been awarded $5.3 million for research about some particles they hope will explain how the universe is held together. At best they are invisible, at worst they do not exist, and yet they could make up 99 per cent of the universe. They are called Weakly Interacting Massive Particles – WIMP’s, for short. A huge laboratory has been built below the cliffs of North Yorkshire where they hope to trap the elusive “dark matter.” The lab, they think, provides perfect conditions to detect the invisible and weightless particles which neither emit nor reflect light nor have any physical properties at all. The experts believe WIMP’s must exist because none of the particles which have already been identified in the universe generate enough gravitational force to hold the stars, planets, and galaxies together. Although there are rival theories, many claim that 99 per cent of the universe is made up of WIMP’s. Scientists say billions of them are passing through us all the time, without doing anything that can be measured or even noticed.  The WIMP team says it has already made great progress in perfecting WIMP detectors. One of them said, “Of course it is hard to explain how we have been successful and it is still possible that we could be completely wrong.”

            How wrong headed! You can’t see them and there’s absolutely no evidence that they exist, yet theory says they must exist because there is no other explanation for how the universe holds together. Scientists would have us believe that they only operate by sight and reason, not by “faith.” But they have more “faith” than some religionists do. They’ve just accepted a grant to support their “assurance of things they hope are true, their conviction of things they have never seen” (compare Hebrews 11:1 for this definition of faith.

            Of course there’s another explanation for the way the universe holds together. Speaking of God scripture says, “He upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3). “By him all things were created and in him all things consist and hold together (Colossians 1:16-17). He is certainly no wimp! But those who trust in impossibilities and believe absurdities, and preach utter foolishness to a credulous world are WIMPS – Weakly Interacting Morons Pretending Science. Like the evolutionists, they assume the impossible is true, because the only alternative is GOD, and they are certainly not prepared to accept that. Another example of those who, professing themselves to be wise, have shown themselves to be fools (Romans 1:22).
