Larrivée D-03E

 

Although this is one of Larrivée's lower priced guitars, it's still a heckuva lot of guitar for the money.  It has a powerful, punchy tonal quality unique to Mahogany bodied guitars (think Martin D-18).

To tell the truth, if I had known about Larrivées at the time I bought my first Taylor, I probably wouldn't have bought the Taylor.

2002 model.  All solid wood.  Canadian Sitka Spruce top.  Mahogany neck, back, and sides.  African Ebony fretboard and bridge.  Ivoroid fretboard binding.  Canadian Maple body binding (which I really like).  Satin urethane finish.

 

For amplification it's equipped with the Larrivée factory installed B-band A5 pickup.

I wanted something I could take to jam sessions or camping and not have to worry about getting a ding on it.  I was also wanting to try out one of these Larrivées.  I'm glad I did.

This guitar's previous owner apparently had a rather unorthodox strumming style.  Hence the little "abrasion" on the treble side of the bridge.  It also needed a serious setup.  The action was low... but someone had used the truss rod to lower it.  The neck actually had a reverse bow and the saddle was so tall the bridge was in danger of splitting from the force of the strings pushing the saddle forward.  I restored the proper neck relief and shaved a little more than 1/32" off the saddle (still plenty left as you can see).  Now she's purring.
