The House in the Woods
Part 3:  A Surprise Under Every Register / Hardwood Flooring Setback

September, 2005

But first the fireplace.  A pile of ashes and trash await whoever opens these glass doors.  In front of the fireplace is an air register.  Where it goes we don't know.

We did find out what was in it, though...

It gets better.  Here's Janet vacuuming out one of the air registers in the living room.

What's in the white bucket?

Why, a dead mouse, of course.  It was down in the duct and got stuck on the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner.

In other registers we found toys, playing cards, unidentifiable fuzzy things, what looked like rabbit turds, and a lot of hard crusty dirt.  In the dining room there was about a one pound bag's worth of rice poured down the air duct.

Now, on to the hardwood floors.  Remember how good they looked?  This is after one coat of finish.  The first coat always soaks in and raises the grain.

The next two pictures are after the second coat.  See anything wrong?

Hint:  It's in the reflections.

It wasn't sanded properly at all.  Full of ripples and little craters.  It's not the first time we've had to intervene in the middle of a job and send someone home.

So, bring in the next hardwood floor guy.
