Drivers and Firmware
Modem manufacturers often release new firmware and drivers to fix bugs and provide performance enhancements in their modems. Firmware normally refers to hardware modems. Hardware modems typically perform better than "soft modems". Drivers normally refer to "soft modems". An example of a soft modem would be any modem having the words "soft" or "winmodem" in them. Other "soft modems" have the letters HCF or HSP in the modem name. These modems usually don't perform as well as a "hardware modem".

If you have a "soft modem" you may be downloading a new driver instead of firmware.
